Memorial forests

More than 190 employees of the SFE “Forests of Ukraine” have given their lives defending Ukraine’s independence in the war against russia. 135 employees are missing. We remember each and every one of them. We care for the families of our heroes (more than 180 children have been left without a parent) – we provide assistance, offer support, and stand by them.

Together with the Union of Forestry Warriors, we are working to ensure that the memory of the fallen lives on. One of the key areas of this work is the creation of “Memorial Forests” – living symbols of gratitude and mourning. The first “Memorial Forests” were planted by foresters back in 2022 in honour of our employees. Their number increases each year. Therefore, the Communications Division of the SFE “Forests of Ukraine” has created a unified database to collect information about all “Memorial Forests”.

The database is continuously updated as we keep gathering and verifying new information.

If you would like to share information about an established “Memorial Forest”, please contact us via the official email of the enterprise, indicating “Memorial Forests” in the subject line. Kindly make sure to include the location and brief information about the forest and the fallen warrior.

The database will also include new “Memorial Forests” that will be created in the future on the lands under the permanent management of the SFE “Forests of Ukraine”. This is our shared mission – to keep the memory alive.

20.12.1967 – 27.09.2024
After finishing school, he began training at the Voluntary Society for Cooperation with the Army, Aviation and Navy (DOSAAF), where he mastered the fundamentals of driving and first aid. These skills proved invaluable when Leonid was conscripted to serve in Afghanistan. There, as a young soldier, he faced the harsh reality of war. He served in the motorized infantry troops and took part in dangerous combat operations, saving the lives of more than one of his comrades.
Later, he found his calling in forestry. Since March 2015, he had worked as a Forest Master at the Vepryk Forestry, where he was responsible for forest maintenance, reforestation activities, and forest protection.
In early May 2024, he was mobilized into the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He served as a sergeant and driver in the Main Personnel Training Center of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine named after Major General Ihor Momot.
On 27 September 2024, during a mortar attack in the village of Prylipka, Kharkiv region, the life of our defender was cut short.
Leonid Nykonenko will forever remain in the hearts of his wife Olha, son Denys and daughter Yuliia, granddaughters Arina and Daryna, as well as his brothers Oleksandr and Valerii.

During his service, he went through intense battles in eastern Ukraine, including participation in the defense of Vuhledar. In the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the forester served as a commander of a machine-gun platoon. His professionalism was duly recognized by the command, and in early November 2024 he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant.
He was killed on 11 November 2024 near the village of Kucherivka in the Sumy region. While carrying out a combat mission, Oleksandr’s unit came under fire from an enemy sabotage and reconnaissance group. As a result of the attack on their combat vehicle, he was killed.
By the end of the year, Oleksandr had been scheduled for demobilization. He planned to return to his work as a Forest Master and to peaceful life among his family and colleagues.
The war took the life of a man who was a pillar for his family. Without Oleksandr remain his mother, wife, and children, for whom he was a loving son, husband, and father.

He was killed while carrying out combat missions in the Donetsk region. A young colleague, full of life and plans — an employee of the Manevychi Forestry branch. Ivan was extremely responsible. There were no small things for him. He worked by the principle: either do it perfectly or not at all. And it was the same in war — to be the first, to protect his comrades, to do everything possible for Victory. If necessary, even to give his life…

Ivan Iliukov
07.02.1978 р. – 03.08.2023 р.
Ivan Iliukov from the settlement of Sosnove in Rivne region died a Hero. On Monday, August 1, he wrote to his wife that he was going on a mission, and by Friday his family had already received the tragic news.
He lived and worked without ever complaining about anything. In the war, he faced every situation with honor. He never told anyone that he had been wounded. He recovered — and returned to the front. On July 2, Ivan Iliukov turned 45. For 21 of those years, he worked as a timber slinger at the lower timber yard of the Sosnivske Forestry branch.
“A very good person — both for his family and for his colleagues. Sincere, kind-hearted, a patriot. His wife Liudmyla and daughters Mariia and Olha remain. We will always remember him,” shares Valentyna, a colleague and family friend of the Hero.
“In the autumn, it will be a year since Ivan was mobilized. From our lower timber yard, six employees were mobilized. Now there are five… Another of our colleagues — now a serviceman — Ivan’s friend Ihor Koteliukh — lost an arm while carrying out a combat mission. He is currently in the hospital awaiting prosthetics; the worst is behind him.
When Ivan was on leave, we met and talked. Only then, in confidence, did he admit that he had been wounded. He said he had not even told his wife so she would not worry. A true man. Courageous, humble, and strong. He was one of our most responsible and best employees. He will forever remain a Hero to all of us. He was one in life, and he left us just as heroically,” recalls Viktor Huntik, Head of the Lower Timber Yard.
